FELIZ CUMPLEANOS PABLO NERUDA
FRUIT STAND DREAMS
I AM A FISH
ITALY ON THE WAY TO WORK
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

Feliz Cumpleaños Pablo Neruda

Like wet, salty oysters of the sea,
I suck up your words.
Brow beaten, Isla Negra hovers
next to the Pacific, heavenly.
Up from the sandy depths, creativity
summoned in luminous abundance.

Translated,
yet untranslatable,
a language which transcends
time, space.
Into the air,
words take off like a dandelion puff,
germinating the naked hills
with flashes of yellow medallions.

I have been held captive,
like a fish flopping in a net.
Deep inside you wrapped my soul
with thick, moist seaweed beds.
I struggled to get away.
Now, your thoughts
are a golden halo on my skin.

You left a legacy
that speak to thousands
personally, politically, poetically, lovingly, raw, honest, true.

A man is a man, this I know.
I long to step into your world,
to understand the faults
which assemble an authentic, complicated man
a friend, peacemaker, activist, poet.

Sailing on the shore of every ocean;
each swell of the unrelenting sea coughs up a new poem.
Your words collapse & elongate against my senses.
From all waters your voice emerges;
transcending into my spirit, like a great yogi sage.

Poet of love and loss
Poet of the people
Poet of the water
Poet of seashells
Poet made up of the bones of Chile

At the crossroads I find you,
a guide offering a plate
of pink watermelon
blood oranges and honey.
Like a descending sun
I will say goodbye to this earth
and sail to the watery depths
with the Captain and his verses.
