FELIZ CUMPLEANOS
PABLO NERUDA
FRUIT STAND DREAMS
I AM A FISH
ITALY ON THE WAY TO WORK
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

Fruit
Stand Dreams
A storm agitates
the unique odor of grass and dirt
Granules between
my thumb and first finger
cry
“This is it! All of life inhabits this dust.”
Compost probes the earth
tender roots flow
deep below into damp darkness
their long tentacles
like jellyfish
wave at the earth worms
as the line
between light and dark is punctured
Out of the earth’s mouth spill fleshy delicacies
tart strawberries
bitter arugula
crabby red apples
bursting cherries
velveteen peaches
pumice skinned cantaloupes
beets with leaves like crimson weeds
bearded corn
smooth skinned mango
porous tangelos
lewd zucchini
Some of these old friends drop off
season after season
galloping against time
A bitter pungent salty sweet sour
feast for the palate
to be eaten by pink lips
