FELIZ CUMPLEANOS
PABLO NERUDA
FRUIT STAND DREAMS
I AM A FISH
ITALY ON THE WAY TO WORK
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS
_______________________________________
Italy
on the Way to Work
I step through tangerine double doors
the street car transports me to Rome
A walled city of history
with door knockers as big as melons
cappuccino and cigarette smoke
pounce into nostrils
Like birds rising in the morning
chattering Italian teens
flock to the piazza
A musty church perfumes
my clothes
with ancient cobblestone leisure
and flowering gardens
Nutella slides its way in
to every meal consumed
The world turns on a shoelace
of Italy’s shiny black boot
This country summons me
to sleep under her starry eyelids
get lost on the island of Capri
where Pablo Neruda
fashioned necklaces of words
for his beloved
Italy, I hear you
calling me
beckoning
on the way to work
as I daydream
in the foreign street car
with advertisements
and passenger instructions
written in Italian
