THE HISTORY OF MY HEART
OH
JENNIFER
WE
MUST NEVER HAVE A FIGHT
We
Must Never Have a Fight
i’ve been tricked
by you
caught in a naïve moment
i’ve let you in on my secret places
even the ones i’ve yet to go
we must never have a fight
i’ve shared my guilty pleasures
my favorite café
to eat succulent prosciutto
and eggplant parmigiana
surely we’ll run into each other
when i want to get away from you
tell me—
how can i give up
grilled cuban corn with cayenne pepper
or the best place
for cappuccino and biscotti?
but now it’s too late
i’ve told you my dreams
somehow you’ve slipped
under my guard
and will know where to find me
in the dark, wooden corner of the Met
where we kissed
or the used bookstore aisle
under dusty shelves of poetry
or my favorite park bench
away from crowds
i should have taken you somewhere new
someplace i’ve never been to
but now it’s too late
we must stay together
but that does not mean
you can get away
with everything |
